Michigan has a rich heritage of gray wolves. By the 1970's northern Minnesota and Isle Royale were the only places where the species survived in the lower 48 states. The population of 600-700 wolves in the Upper Peninsula has remained stable for over a decade, without a hunting season. However, the threat of federal delisting puts these and other wolves at risk. In the Northern Rockies, hundreds of wolves are killed each year in state-approved trophy hunts. And recently, neighboring Wisconsin saw a shocking 218 wolves killed in a trophy hunt that lasted less than 72 hours. We cannot stand by and let Michigan face a similar fate. As proud Michiganders, we have already rallied against two state laws that would have permitted trophy hunting. Now, our fight must go on. You can play a crucial role in safeguarding the future for wolves, not only in Michigan but across the nation.
